Beant Singh (February 19, 1922 - August 31, 1995, Chandigarh) was an Indian Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 to 1995. Singh was a Sikh, and a member of the Congress Party. Born in the village of Pakistan, he settled down in village Bilaspur in Ludhiana district. Thereafter he shifted to village Kotli in District Ludhiana. He attended the Government College University in Lahore. At the age of 23, he joined the army but after two years of service, he started concentrating on politics, social work and public affairs. He began his political career with Akali Dal, after the partition of India in 1947. In 1960, he was elected chairman of block samiti of Doraha, in Ludhiana district. After serving for some time as Director of the Central cooperative bank in Ludhiana, Beant Singh finally entered the portals of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha as an independent candidate in 1969.
