A Masters in Economics from the Sri Venkateswara University, Chandrababu Naidu was working towards a Ph.D. Degree, when he decided to join politics. Naidu was elected to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for the first time in 1978 from Chandragiri. He was re-elected as an MLA in 1989 and 1994. He became the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1995. He led the TDP to victory in the Assembly elections in 1999 and became the chief minister for the second term. Known famously as the CEO of Andhra Pradesh, Naidu made Hyderabad into one of the top IT destinations in the country. However, the TDP lost power in the 2004 Assembly elections largely due to agrarian distress in the state. He also survived an assassination attempt allegedly by a Naxal outfit, Peoples War Group, on October 1, 2003.
