Jamnashtami falls today and it's time to break some matkas in honour of Lord Krishna. Hopeful Govindas would do well to look to Bollywood for some inspiration and we look at some of the stars who tried their hands at breaking the elusive handi:
Sonakshi Sinha and Prabhudeva: Sonakshi Sinha will also be dancing to the 'dahi handi' grooves in the film 'Oh My God'. The track titled ‘Go Govinda' sees Sonakshi shaking a leg alongside south star and ace dancer Prabhu Deva.
Rajneesh Duggal: Model-turned-actor Rajneesh Duggal also made a spirited attempt at being a govinda in 3D feature 'Main Krishna Hoon'. Let's hope he tastes some success this time around, especially since his past films '1920' and 'Phir' have sunk without a trace.
Hrithik Roshan: Bollywood hunk Hrithik too joined the B-town govinda bandwagon with an attempt to reach for the prize in the Karan Johar's remake of 'Agneepath'.
Salman Khan: In the movie 'Hello Brother' Sallu tries to break the matki and while doing so, also attempts to woo leading lady Rani Mukherjee, to the tunes of the song 'Chandi Ki Daal'.
Amitabh Bachchan: Big B's performance in the song 'Mach gaya shor' is still played at most dahi handi events, and has the crowds grooving to the music. The song from the flick 'Khuddar' remains of one the most memorable Gokulashtami depictions in Hindi cinema.
Shatrughan Sinha: With so many attempting to take a crack at the handi, it's not surprising that B-town's 'Shotgun' would be far behind. Sinha was shown trying to break the pot in the 1974 movie 'Badla'
Shammi Kapoor: The late Shammi Kapoor was one of the first to star in a Gopal Kala scene in the movie 'Bluffmaster'. He danced to the song 'Govinda aala re aala' sung by none other than Mohammed Rafi, and audiences were taken in by the explosion of colour and energy
Sanjay Dutt: In the movie 'Vaastav', Sanju baba grooves to the tune of 'Har Taraf Hai', as he has a go at breaking the handi during the festival. It's an exercise in perseverance, as you watch him first fail, and then succeed at getting to the pot, while his group
Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff: The hit actor duo of the 90s delighted audiences once again with the govinda acts in the movie 'Kala Bazar'. The song 'Govinda Gopala' remains a hot favourite during celebrations today
Sunil Dutt: It isn't an exciting challenge without a little competition, and in the 1979 movie 'Muqabla', we see Sunil Dutt take on Shatrughan Sinha in a battle of the govindas. The song 'Teen batti' perfectly captured the mood and was a vocal jugalbandi in itself,
