Kalyan-Dombivli is a city and a municipal corporation with its headquarters located in Kalyan in Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It was formed in 1982 to administer the twin townships of Kalyan and Dombivli. The municipal corporation has a population 1,193,266 (2001 census), and covers 137.15 square km, giving a density of 8,700 people per square km Kalyan has a history 700 years. Due to its highly educated population it is often called the second cultural capital of Maharashtra after Pune. Kalyan was famous as a port since ancient times. Records of its existence as a premier port in the region have been found in ancient Greek manuscripts. King Shivaji started his Navy here using it as a premier port of his kingdom.
