About Magha (poet)

Magha (b. Srimala, Gujarat, c. 8th century CE) was a Sanskrit poet at King Varmalata\s court at Srimala, the-then capital of Gujarat (presently in Rajasthan state). Magha was son of Dattaka and grandson of Suprabha Deva. His epic poem (mahAkAvya) Shishupala Vadha, in 20 cantos is based on the Mahabharata episode where the defiant king Shishupala is beheaded by Krishna\s chakra (disc)[1]Since his grandfather was clearly a Mag Brahmin,he belonged to the Indo-Iranian community of Brahmins presently known as Shakdvipi Brahmins. A popular verse in Sansrit literature goes: \"Kalidasa is famous for his similes, Bharavi for his insights, Dandi rules with his delectable poetry but Magh has all three virtues!\" उपमा कालिदासस्य भारवेरर्थगौरवं| दन्डिन: पदलालित्यं माघे सन्ति त्रयो
