Mark Spitznagel (born March 5, 1971) is an American hedge fund manager and derivatives trader. Spitznagel is the owner and Chief Investment Officer of the Santa Monica, California-based hedge fund management company Universa Investments, L.P., which he founded in 2007[1][2][3][4][5]. Universa specializes in equity options trading[2][5] and has approximately $2 billion under management[2][4]. He has been an independent pit-trader at the Chicago Board of Trade[2][3][5], the head of equity options in a proprietary trading group at Morgan Stanley in New York[5], and the head trader at hedge fund Empirica Capital LLC in Greenwich and New York (President and partner with Nassim Nicholas Taleb)[5][6].
