Govinda was supposed to attend a show on Day Two of fashion week. If that wasn’t hysterical enough a paradox, he was replaced at the last minute by Tusshar Kapoor. Sapna Bhavnani’s show had the maximum celeb impact, with singers Kailash Kher and Hard Kaur sharing the front row with Farhan Akhtar’s hairstylist wife, Adhuna. But C-list celebrities aside, here were the top trends on show:
Drop crotch
Let’s be honest, this nouveau hippie style can’t be called flattering or classy. But Wendell Rodricks’ floor-grazing versions with brightly coloured stripes on the bottom actually make this seem worth the price. Not to mention it completely eliminates any thunder thigh insecurities. Power shoulders Is the pointy ’80s shoulder back? Jatin Varma, Wendell Rodricks and even Aarti Vijay Gupta resurrected the trend that had died a natural death only a few seasons ago. Who needs to bulk up at the gym when a pair of measly shoulder pads can do all the work for you? Thigh-high It’s the opposite of the mullet — party in the front, business in the back. These new skirt suits, courtesy designers like Drashta and Yogesh Chaudhary, offset the natural maternal nature of the ensemble with thigh-revealing slits in the front that would make nice Catholic aunties blush.
Laundry Pile
Roma Narsinghani looked lovely in a simple ecru and lime dress when she took a bow after her fashion show. But the designer didn’t extend the same graciousness to her models, who were dressed in some head-scratching outfits. It all looked like a fourth grader’s origami project gone wrong.
Nethra Raghuraman, Model
One of the veterans of the fashion industry, model Nethra Raghuraman’s career turns the idea of ‘youth is beauty’ on its head. The dusky ramp walker lets us in on some of her style secrets.
Hair
The only person who I allow to cut my hair is Coleen Khan. If she’s out of the country for six months, I won’t even go for a trim, even if I end up looking like a bushman at the end of it. She knows my personality and my hair and gives me the best cuts.
Make-upEver since MAC opened in India, life has become much easier. Before that, I would have to stock up on products every time I travelled abroad. I also love using Bobbi Brown’s compact, and MAC’s bronzer.
Clothes
I love the easy breezy styles from James Ferreira and Savio Jon. But I also love street shopping, especially at the export surplus stores at Linking Road and Colaba Causeway. They have high quality cotton clothes made in Bangladesh and India, but aren’t sold here. I once bought a Zara dress in Philadelphia, only to find it being sold for Rs. 200 on the street here.
