Ever since the word has been out, so much has been said and seen about Imtiaz Ali's latest flick #JabHarryMetSejal. Let's talk about the actual film now!
Revolving around a somewhat lost tour guide and a clumsy forgetful client, Ali takes us through yet another tour of #Europe as we all look for Sejal's misplaced engagement ring with Harry. With a star cast and an adored director- who could expect anything less than a blockbuster? But expectations are the root of all heartache, they say.
Maybe two great things should sometimes be left alone in their individual glory because bringing them together could be quite disappointing.
Imtiaz Ali seems to have undergone a writer's block, looking for inspirations in his own past work and borrowing a bit too much perhaps? Because if you have ever wondered what a Gujarati version of Geet will be like, and if Shah Rukh Khan could play Aditya's character from Jab We Met in his own style- you'll find your answers in this film, my friend. Anushka Sharma 's character, Sejal, needed to remind us of her ethnicity way too much, not understanding that she would have been an equally cute and lovable calamity Jane had she not tried too hard with the accent- which also went away as per convenience and mood, by the way. And Shah Rukh’s Harry was, well, Shah Rukh- which should probably now be termed as an adjective to be used for his own acting in each film.
Looking at other angles, the film has nothing short of beautiful cinematography and the essence of Europe mixed with desi characters and every other prerequisite of a Bollywood style romantic comedy but it will still make you feel like you are watching a film you've seen a thousand times before, just with a different metaphor this time and with music that is not very likely to get stuck in your head, at least not for the right reasons.
So if all you are looking for is a couple of fun-filled hours with humour-filled romance and the typical Bolly-style dance-music treatment you might end up having an okay time. But if you are out looking for a deeper meaning with a revelation, let me tell you now that you will not find ‘what you are seeking’ as the film’s tagline will trick you into believing. Especially if what you seek is a logical story line and realistic situations.
Here’s hoping this is not the start of another era of “if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all” for romantic comedies in India.
Jab Harry Met Sejal: A title that's a mashup of Jab We Met (2007) and When Harry Met Sally (1989). the result is a mash up as well of the director's previous films. Imtiaz Ali's latest film may star the king of romance but even Shahrukh Khan can't save this one writes Vrinda Arora
