In a case highlighting the menace of child sexual abuse in the city, a four-year-old nursery student from a reputable school in Juhu was molested on the school bus on Tuesday by a bus cleaner.

The girl told her father that she was inappropriately touched the next day, after which he approached the school with a written statement.

"The principal immediately facilitated a medical check-up," said the school in an email. On January 17, the parents and a school trustee filed a complaint with the Juhu police and handed over the accused, the bus driver and woman attendant present on the bus, to the police.

The cleaner, Ramesh Rajput, 35, has been arrested on charges under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offen-ces Act. "We have registered a strong case for a non-bailable offence and will ensure the culprit is punished severely. We will also terminate our contract with the bus owner," said the trustee in an email.

The woman attendant who was present on the bus, in accordance with the state's school bus safety policy, had confronted the cleaner and stopped him. She was initially afraid to be a witness because she knew the cleaner for many years but was supportive later.

"A shocked school is recovering from the incident:" said the school's statement.
