According to National Crime Records Bureau, the cases of rape went up by 873 percent in the last decade. Shockingly, between 2007 and 2011, rape incidents increased by 9.7 percent, three times faster than all other crimes put together. According to ‘The Guardian’, India is the worst place to be a woman. Delhi : Rightly christened the rape capital of India, the capital city is one of the worst in the country. People fear the city so much that women and sometimes even men don't venture out in the night! According to the National Survey, between 2007 and 2011, Delhi saw 2,620 rape cases.

Mumbai: Once considered a safe city for women, Mumbai's crime rate has also gone up in the last decade. The recent rape and murder of a 25-year-old law student, who was assaulted at her home by her watchman has only added to the woes of the financial capital of India. 1,033 cases of rape were reported between 2007 and 2011.

Kolkata: The sleepy town of Kolkata , which is never in the news for the wrong reasons, is also slowly becoming a hot bed for rapes (pun unintended). There were over 200 cases that were reported between 2007 and 2011.

Bangalore : With BPOs mushrooming out in every corner of the city and women employees traveling late at night in office cabs, the tech capital has also made it to this shameful list. About 383 cases were reported in Bangalore in the last 10 years.

Chennai: The city of temples is also on the list, what with over 293 cases of rape being reported between 2007 and 2011. Even though Chennai features high on the literacy rate list, it still fails to provide basic protection to its women.
