Based on suspicions, the Mumbra police has been recording the statement of Imtiaz Merchant for the last one week.
Imtiaz Merchant, a co-accused in the murder case of Gulshan Kumar, has been brought in for questioning for the August 11 riots. The Mumbra police have been calling in Merchant to record his statement regarding the violence that erupted at Azad Maidan.
Based on preliminary investigation, cops suspect a foreign element was responsible for the riots and based on suspicions, the Mumbra police has been recording Merchant’s statement for the past one week.
“We believe we will receive many clues that will help us solve the case through the statements given by Merchant,” said a police officer.
Confirming the development, Senior Police Inspector Arun Sonde said, “We are calling him (Imtiaz) for statement. We are taking his statements on basis of suspicion and I cannot reveal anything beyond that.”
It is believed that the riots, which took place on August 11, were pre-planned and a foreign hand was responsible for it.
Officials also claim that the mass exodus of the North-Easterners from the city owing to an SMS was sent by a foreign element.
