Passengers travelling in any reserved compartment on long-distance trains will now have to carry an original proof of identity with them, a requirement previously limited only to those travelling in air-conditioned coaches.
The railway ministry has extended the condition to all
passengers to prevent the misuse of the ticket reservation system, particularly by touts and middlemen.
The requirement will apply to anyone travelling in AC coaches, as well as in the reserved second class, economy class and sleeper class compartments.
The list of approved proofs includes a voter's id, passport, PAN card, driving licence, pension pay order, ration card with photographs, senior citizen card, BPL card, ESI card, CGHS card, passbook from a nationalised bank with a photograph, credit card with photograph, Aadhar card and identity cards issued by a school (for students).
The railways will treat a passenger travelling without any of these ID proofs as travelling without a ticket.
