India Against Corruption (IAC) leader Arvind Kejriwal on Monday alleged that most of the beneficiaries of eqipment meant for handicapped people distributed by a trust run by Law Minister Salman Khurshid were "fictitious names".
Kejriwal, who on Sunday said he would produce more "evidence" against Khurshid whom he has accused of forgery and embezzlement of funds through an NGO, said IAC members tried to locate the people given wheelchairs, hearing aids and tricycles by the trust, but found most of them to be "fictitious".
The IAC leader, who has launched an as yet-unnamed political party, also wondered why the Congress party was trying to back Khurshid. "Why is the Congress trying to support the trust... what relationship does the party have to the trust," he asked at a rally at Jantar Mantar here.
Kejriwal brought along with him some handicapped people whose names allegedly figure on the list of beneficiaries of the Khurshid-run Zakir Husain Trust. The handicapped people claimed they had not got anything from the trust during camps held in 2011.
The IAC activist alleged the Uttar Pradesh government would not act against Khurshid as the ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's lawyer in a disproportionate assets case in the apex court is Salman Khurshid,
Mulayam Singh's son Akhilesh Yadav is the chief minister. "Both will save each other, Kejriwal alleged. Khurshid has denied allegations of embezzlement by his NGO. On Sunday, Khurshid produced documents and pictures to prove that camps were held in Uttar Pradesh to provide hearing aids and tricycles to the disabled by his trust. He said he will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to "share his experiences".
Khurshid denied any wrongdoing by the Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust, of which he is president and wife Louise is project director, and said he would pursue legal action against a TV news channel which first aired allegations of financial misappropriation in the running of the trust. BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said "a proper enquiry" should be held into the allegations against Khurshid.
