The 51-year-old woman, whose greed triggered the sordid ‘baby Falak saga’, was finally nabbed by the Delhi Police on Monday. The incident shocked the entire nation earlier this year. The accused, Saroj, is a resident of Rohtak in Haryana. She had allegedly taken to the business of exploiting young, potential brides — such as the mother of battered Baby Falak — for grooms in Haryana and Rajasthan for a hefty price.
Saroj’s main agenda behind this operation was getting her five daughters married. “Two years ago, Saroj came in contact with Kanta Chaudhary, who, along with her husband, was in the business of getting bachelors from Haryana and Rajasthan married. Saroj was arrested from Rohtak,” said an officer.
On January 26, Hindustan Times had first reported on the battered toddler’s sordid saga as she battled for her life at the AIIMS Trauma Centre after evident physical abuse. A taxi driver, Rajkumar, had handed Falak over to his 14-year-old girlfriend. He was arrested soon after. According to the police, one of the couple’s other associates, Laxmi, used to bring destitute women from Bihar.
In this case too, police said, Laxmi brought Munni Khatoon — the battered toddler’s mother — to Delhi before naming her Anita and introducing her to one Karpal Singh from Rajasthan’s Jhunjunoo area. “To make sure that the match went through without any hassle, Saroj posed as Munni’s mother. Also, Rs. 2.70 lakh were taken from Harpal’s family as ‘payment’ for arranging his bride,” the officer said. Saroj’s is the sixth arrest in the case. She has been sent to judicial custody.
