BSP leader Mayawati on Wednesday accused the UPA government of pursuing "anti-people policies" and said she would soon decide whether or not to withdraw support to it. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also said the Lok Sabha elections could be held before their schedule in 2014 due to the "uncertainty" plaguing the Congress-led UPA government.
She told the media here that the Bahujan Samaj Party's leadership and MPs discussed issues of governance on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning but left the final decision to her. "I have been entrusted the responsibility," she added. "But this decision will be taken and conveyed to you very soon." Mayawati gave enough indication to suggest that the BSP was unhappy with the central government.
She said the central government's polices were hurting the interests of religious minorities, the poor, Dalits and other sections of the people. "We had extended our support to the UPA government in the hope that this government will weaken communal forces... Sadly, right from the beginning, the central government's attitude has been disappointing."
She said the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not taking any firm steps to curb rising prices of food and essential commodities as well as corruption. The BSP has 21 members in the Lok Sabha. She said the party hoped to emerge as "a balance of power" if and when the next parliamentary election is held. "We are confident of that."
