A day after the mystery death of model-actor Bidushi Dash Barde in Mumbai, the police are yet to decide whether it was a case of murder or an accident.
The 23-year-old former beauty queen from Chennai was a diabetic. She was found lying in a pool of blood in her Andheri flat, glass shards lodged in her face and neck. Apparently she had fallen on a glass shelf and had bled to death. The body was found by her husband Kedar Barde, a software engineer, when he came home on Monday night.
Kedar claimed his wife was prone to dizziness and at first the police suspected that Barde could have suffered a diabetic attack and fell on the glass shelf, which led to her death. The last call she made -- at 8.12 am -- was to a chemist, but the shop was yet to open.
But a postmortem found a wound below the right ear, which might have been inflicted. “The wound was not lacerated. It was deep and penetrating, which was definitely not caused by any of the glass shards found at the spot,” said a senior police officer. “We have registered a case of murder but we are investigating the matter from all angles,” said Pratap Dighavkar, DCP (Zone 9).
What has skewed the case further is that there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle in the flat. A domestic help and the building’s watchman gave contradictory statements about a visitor.
Ambubai Lavte said she had seen a man though the glass door of the flat. Watchman Dharampal said no one visited the flat in the morning, but a man came in the afternoon and left when no one answered the doorbell. The police are checking Barde’s cellphone records.
