Khan said names of 42 witnesses were annexed to the Khan said names of 42 witnesses were annexed to the chargesheet which was filed within the stipulated 90 days of the arrest of Gurjar, the lone accused in the case. The court fixed June 11 for next hearing. In reducing the severity of the charges against Gurjar, the CBI has concurred with the view of Madhya Pradesh police which had ruled out the involvement of mining mafia in the killing but handed it over to the premier investigative agency following public outrage and a demand by his IAS wife. "There is no mining mafia link to the killing. The accused person is a farmer. We are interrogating the case further," DIG, Gwalior range, Dev Prakash Gupta had said days after the incident. The young IPS officer\'s family, however, had suspected a conspiracy behind his death. "It is clear that this was a well-planned conspiracy. He did not receive cooperation of the local police. He stopped vehicles carrying stones for check. Is it the work of the IPS officer, or the work of a thana-level police?" Keshav Dev, the father of the officer, had said. The suspicion was not totally unfounded as Singh, who was posted to Banmore in Morena district as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) barely a month ago before his untimely death, had taken on the mining mafia by seizing number of trucks and tractors engaged in illegal quarrying. His wife Madhurani Tewatia, an IAS officer, was pregnant when tragedy befell the family on Holi. Gurjar was alleged to have run over Singh after he signalled him to stop and was booked for murder under section 302 of IPC. The officer was declared brought dead at the hospital.
