Police have arrested two key Kashmiri suspects they blamed for killing four police officers and a pro-India politician in more than a dozen attacks in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

Police inspector-general Shiv Murari Sahai says one of the arrested men is a state police officer and the other is a militant belonging to Kashmir's main rebel group, Hezb-ul Mujahedeen. The suspects allegedly attacked government forces and targets in Srinagar city over the past 18 months.

Sahai said Tuesday the suspects acted in the name of the Kashmir Islamic movement and that it was an offshoot of the Hezb-ul Mujahedeen. There was no independent confirmation of that claim.

Half a dozen rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule in Kashmir. More than 68,000 people have been killed since 1989.
