If Congress minister Sriprakash Jaiswal thought old wives lose their charm, his ‘friends’ in the BJP decided it was time they found him a new wife. And so they did.
On Thursday, a poster was seen in Kanpur, which put together Jaiswal and actor Rakhi Sawant in full wedding regalia. But the joke backfired badly.
On Friday, a furious Sawant called up BJP leaders, asking them to wed their own Smriti Irani and Hema Malini to Jaiswal and demanding an apology.
“She felt being ‘married off’ to a 68-year-old politician would portray her in a negative light and deprive her of Mr Right,” said Shri Krishna Dixit of BJP youth wing, who spoke to Sawant.
“We told her moral lectures from her were not welcome, but we put forth an apology.”
But the retreat has not pacified anyone. The women’s organisations, which took on Jaiswal for his comment earlier this week, are now livid with the BJP.
“First the minister lowered the self esteem of women and now the BJP assassinated the character of a woman to score political points,” said Neelam Chaturvedi, convenor of Mahila Manch.
