All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi has been arrested on the charge of not cooperating with the police in connection with the hate speech case against him.
Two FIRs were registered suo motu at Adilabad and Nizamabad districts while a third case was registered by Osmania University police, following a court directive after Owaisi allegedly used inflammatory language against a particular community in December 2012.
Owaisi has been booked under Sec 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and Sec 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) of IPC. The MIM legislator has also been booked under Sec 121 (waging or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war, against the Government of India) of IPC. Here's all you need to know about him:
He is a politician based in Hyderabad. The firebrand politico is known for his inflammatory hate speeches, mostly against Hindus and Hinduism, which have sparked controversies over the years.
The Islamist leader, on December 24, 2012, said at a public meeting in Adilabad that the 250 million Muslims of India needed only 15 minutes without the police to show one billion Hindus of India who is more powerful. Three FIRs were lodged against Owaisi in Andhra Pradesh this month for waging a war against government of India, promoting enmity between communities and insulting religious feelings or beliefs. This is not the first time the Islamist leader has made hate speeches. We take a look at his other such controversial banters.
Fatwa against writer Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasreen (2007)
The Owaisi scion, who pursued medicine till his second year of MBBS before quitting it to join politics, threatened to carry out a fatwa issued against writer Salman Rushdie in 2007 for hurting the sentiments of Muslims. He also threatened to behead Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen and openly remarked, 'See what happened to Taslima and P V Narasimha Rao. They were forced into oblivion for hurting the sentiments of the Muslims.'
Called AP MLA's Kafirs & Kufrastan (2011)
Owaisi, who fell in love and got married to a Christian woman much against his parents' wishes, has always been a rebel. He used the derogatory terms Kafirs (disbeliever or infidel) and Kufrastan to refer to MLAs in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He also used the words katil (murderer), darinda (monster), beimaan (dishonest), dhokebaaz (cheat), and chor (thief) for former Prime Minister of India P V Narasimha Rao. Moreover, Owaisi said that if Rao had not died, (Owaisi) would have killed him with his bare hands.
Demeaned the Hindu God Rama (April, 2012)
If demeaning the Hindus wasn't enough, the 42-year-old MIL MLA made derogatory remarks against the Hindu god Ram too. He asked at a rally,'Where all did Ram’s mother (Kaushalya) go wandering and where did she give birth to him?'
Called AP Police 'army of impotent people' (November, 2012)
The self-declared savior of Muslims made another remark in Hyderabad when he called the police force of Andhra Pradesh an "army of impotent people".
