Catching a burglar is one thing. But abusing the police for incompetence is quite another. Chandigarh’s Henna Bakshi found that out on Monday.

At the age of 12, Bakshi had received a national bravery award for the first. At 23, she got booked under the IT Act for the second. The
charges levelled against her under the IT Act are non-bailable and carry a jail term of up to three years.

A month ago, the army officer’s daughter had posted a comment peppered with abuses on the Union Territory traffic police’s Facebook page after they failed to redress her complaint about the theft of her car. Though the police proved ineffective at catching car thieves, its cyber cell managed to trace Bakshi from her Internet protocol (IP) address.

Along with Bakshi, one Kamalpreet Singh was also booked for posting abusive comments supporting Bakshi’s grievance.

On Monday, Bakshi told HT she posted the comment after suffering harassment from the police. The car was stolen on August 11, but no case had been registered.

On August 15, she wrote on Facebook, “You people kill us with your ‘nakaas’ n check points. Harassing us if we are just driving around at night. But you have no ****** clue when somebody steals that car from under your eyes… The police started questioning me… If I was making this whole *** up or if someone actually stole it (sic).”

Chandigarh police chief PK Srivastava said investigations were on and he was closely monitoring the case.
