Director Michael Winterbottom’s ‘Trishna’ is getting a limited release in America this week. The film has been appreciated at several film festivals and in Britain prior to this release. Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles', the film is about two lovers and how their different upbringing causes a rift between them.
Freida Pinto is playing the lead role of Trishna who hails from a remote village in Rajasthan. Due to some unexpected changes in the situation, she gets a chance to work for a rich NRI businessman Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed). She falls in love with the guy who is not only spoilt but also doesn’t understand the social fabric of the traditional Indian society.
The film has been shot at different locations in Jaipur and Mumbai despite the fact that the original story was based in countryside Britain.
Indian film enthusiasts have some special reasons to cheer about as filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and his actor wife Kalki Koechlin are playing important roles in the film. Not only this, music composer Amit Trivedi is also playing an important cameo in the film. ‘Trishna’ also marks the international singing debut of Kavita Seth.
‘Trsihna’ is director Michael Winterbottom's third Thomas Hardy adaptation, after 'Jude' and 'The Claim'. Winterbottom has directed 17 films in last fifteen years and has been nominated thrice for Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
‘Trishna’ claims to be the life story of a woman whose life gets defined by her love. The concept is interesting and Thomas Hardy’s novel is a complete saga of love and the phenomenon of self destruction attached to it, so ‘Trishna’ has the potential of becoming a good film.
