A still from the film

The last time Jackie Shroff and Aditya Pancholi acted together was twelve years ago in a movie called ‘Jung’, that crashed and burned at the box office. However unfazed by that, the actors have come together again in a Marathi movie called ‘Hridaynath’. They shouldn’t have bothered, as this film too, doesn’t hit the mark.

What’s it about?
Sadashiv Sawant (Jackie Shroff) is a timid schoolteacher, who has no spine to stand up for what’s right. His motto is if someone strikes you on one cheek, offer the other as well. His wife (Chinmayi Sumit) and daughter Akshata (Swarangi Marathe) suffer because of Sawant’s mild nature. Nawab Parkar (Aditya Pancholi) is a gangster, who parades as a social worker. When Sadashiv suffers a heart attack, Parkar, who is injured in an encounter, becomes the donor for his heart transplant. A phenomenal change occurs in Sadashiv’s behaviour, as he turns into rogue gangster Tatya Sawant who extorts money, gambles, and also teaches school kids wrestling in a moral science class.

A still from the film

During the film, and especially after Sawant’s transformation, this reviewer was waiting for Jackie to utter the ‘Maushi’ word, which thankfully, did not happen. On the other hand, Jackie’s onscreen portrayal seemed exactly like his offscreen persona as he struggles with the Marathi dialogues. If you want to watch Jaggu Dada doing a meaningful role in a Marathi film, then watch Renuka Shahane’s ‘Rita’, where Jackie stuns you with his performance. Pancholi doesn’t seem to have changed from his ‘Sailaab’ days, where all he does is stare intently at Madhuri while she grooves to the music in ‘Humko Aaj Kal Hai’. Urmila Matondkar, who is roped in for a lavani number called ‘Ya Na’, has no zing. There is a Ganesh Chaturthi song ‘Payan Naman’, that remains with you longer. Also the dialogue, that means to be poignant, feels cheesy.

What to do
‘Hridaynath’ fails to touch your heart. Meant only for Jackie Shroff fans, if there are any left out there!
