UTV Motion Pictures and Avni Cinemax (P) Ltd productions’ “Kalakalappu @ Masala Cafe” released without much fanfare. Director Sundar.C who is known for his comedy capers like ‘Ullathai Allitha’ is back to his forte after taking acting in between and didn’t taste much success. But whether this flick worked as promised by the team as summer treat for family is the question.
What’s it about?
Seenu (Vimal) tries his best to run the once famous hotel ‘Masala Cafe' with an old chef and his grand-daughter Maya (Oviya), but in vain as he has run out of funds. He has already borrowed a huge sum from Anjuvatti Azhagesan (Ilavarasu) and unable to payback. Adding to his woes, health inspector Madhavi (Anjali) enters the scene and Seenu unknowingly had a fight and lands himself in further trouble. Seenu’s brother Raghu (Shiva) returns from jail and not only saves him from Azhagesan, but also helps him to win over the heart of Madhavi. Meanwhile, Maya falls for Raghu and they all join together to give the hotel a changeover by introducing the medicinal foods.
There is a separate track where a guy searches for his lost diamonds and the brothers get entangled into it. Another one tries to get the hotel through local cop Dharman (John Vijay). In the midst of all the chaos, Vettupuli (Santhanam) the ‘Murai Maaman’ of Madhavi arrives and finally, all these meet for a climax.
Director Sundar.C has tried to knot too many plots in single film and failed to go in detail and give the much needed focus. Logic goes for a toss in most parts. So, the end product is a half-baked script relying solely on slapstick comedy. Though the film has a well-known cast who have the potential to pull off, he failed to capitalize on the same. Vimal didn’t impress much but Shiva shines in delivering one-liners in his own style. Anjali and Oviya have nothing much to do apart from dancing for songs in skimpy clothes. Santhanam as usual tickles your funny bone in few scenes.
Vijay Ebenezer’s songs are catchy but completely out of sync with the milieu and he has a long way to go in terms of background music. UK Senthil’s cinematography better and editing would have been crisp.
What to do?
Kalakalappu has its moments but ultimately meanders. Go for it only if you have nothing better to do.
