AGS Entertainment's 'MaattrraaN' has released after tremendous hype surrounding the film as Surya – K.V.Anand combo's previous commercial film 'Ayan' was a blockbuster. Add to it, the story's about conjoined twins which further increased the expectations. Has the film delivered what it promised? Read on to find out!
What's it about?
The story is very complex as lot of strings attached together. The film starts with giving birth to conjoined twins with a single heart. The doctor advises to kill the one without a heart. Their mother didn’t want to and brings them as they are. Twin brothers Vimalan and Agilan (both played by Surya) joined at sides grow up opposite in character. Vimalan is a soft, traditional man and cares for others whereas Agilan is a modern, playboy who enjoys life at every moment. Anjali (Kajal) falls for Vimalan and things go smooth in their life. Their father Ramachandran (Sachin), a genetic scientist runs a food company and launched special product called 'Energion'. It gives instant energy within minutes. To know the secret behind successful Energion, a Russian journalist who is a friend of Anjali spies their company without the knowledge of twins and Anjali. She gets some information from one of the employees and the next day he is dead. Soon after, she informs Vimalan that Energion has harmful contents and kids eating them will soon die. Ramachandran kills her as her secrets will damage the company’s future prospects, but she saves secret in pen drive and it reaches Anjali’s hand. Smelling something fishy about it, she hands it over to Vimalan. Knowing this, Ramachandran sends men to get the pen drive and during the fight, Vimalan gets hurt and dies. Agilan survives with heart transplant operation. The rest of the story is about how Agilan with the help of Anjali solves the mystery behind Energion and how he takes on his own father.
KV Anand has tried too many plots in a single film which backfired. He has all the resources to make an enjoyable commercial flick – Promising cast, strong technical crew, heavy budget and decent script too. But he has failed in execution and what we finally get to see is a below par film without logic. He is totally confused about the film’s genre. It starts as a commercial with entertaining parts but latter turns into a thriller which drags a lot and finally ends like a sci-fi with reasons behind twins' birth and energion.
Suriya has given his full commitment and it shows in screen. His presence only makes the film work to an extent especially he is charming as flirt Agilan. His dedication is seen throughout the film as he has to reshoot the same scenes as both Vimalan & Agilan. Kajal has a meaty role and she has delivered it well. Sachin Khendelwal is brilliant as scientist cum shrewd minded industrialist. The rest of the cast too did well.
Harris Jayaraj's songs are good even though they are his typical template numbers. He has to improve his background score which is a letdown in this film too. Soundarajan's cinematography is amazing particularly capturing the scenic beauty in 'Nani Koni' song. Editing by Antony is neat and VFX effects are top notch as Supervisor Srinivasan added one more feather to his hat as Maatraan is India’s first film to use performance capture technique.
To sum it up, Maattrraan has an entertaining first half with masala mix, but drags a lot in second half and ends as predicted.
What to do?
It's better give the film a miss and wait for DVD.
