Movie: Shootout At Wadala
Language: Hindi
Starring: John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Ronit Roy, Siddhanth Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Sonu Sood
Directed by: Sanjay Gupta

A Sanjay Gupta film is often a mix of all the usual suspects - gangsters, item girls, violence and lots of cuss words. ‘Shootout At Wadala’, based on S Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Dongri to Dubai’ is no different, but even with a star-studded cast, three item songs and good plot material, the film lacks in more ways than one, and this keeps it from being a solid entertainer.

What's it about?
The film is about Manya Surve (John Abraham), a simple and hardworking student who falls on bad times. Sent to jail for a crime he didn't committed, Manya changes from being a goody-two-shoes to Mumbai’s most sought-after gangster. With the help of Sheikh Munir (Tusshar Kapoor), Manya tries to get a firm foothold in Mumbai's already crowded underworld that is witnessing violent warfare between the Maqsood gang and Zubair Imtiaz Hakkasar (Manoj Bajpayee) & Dilawar Imtiaz Hakkasar(Sonu Sood). A Mumbai police team, that includes Inspector Afaaque (Anil Kapoor), Tambat (Ronit Roy) and Inspector Bheende (Mahesh Manjrekar), recognizes an opportunity to wipe out the gangs while rivalries rage on. In the midst of all this, Manya’s passionate love story with Vidya (Kangna Ranaut) simmers on the back burner.

The film feels too long, with the entire first half wasted in establishing Manya's character. Many bits, including Priyanka Chopra’s item number, could have easily been done away with on the editing table. The second half of the film is when all the action happens, but after a tiring sequence just before intermission, it's hard to appreciate it.

John Abraham does a pretty decent job as Manya Surve. He gets into the whole dialogue-baazi routine and (thankfully) gives us little reason to complain. From the 2007 film ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ to its prequel in 2013, Tusshar Kapoor’s role as the reliable sidekick has remained the same - and he still incredibly mediocre at portraying it. Anil Kapoor as Inspector Afaaque does a good job, but we still prefer Sanjay Dutt's police act from 'Shootout At Lokhandwala'. Kapoor does however, get some whistle-worthy lines (Police ki goli mein itna loha hai ki ek baar thok daali toh puri life mein khoon mein lohe hi kami nahi hogi) and this helps break the monotony of Manya's character development.

Sonu Sood and Manoj Bajpayee are the best things about this film. Sadly though, their story wasn’t given as much screen time as we would have liked. Dawood Ibrahim's name has conveniently been changed to Dilawar Imtiaz Hakkasar but the huge sunglasses are enough to help the audience guess who the inspiration was.

Kangna Ranaut's performance is below average. With bad dialogue delivery and ugly love making scenes, she gets lost in the large ensemble cast. Siddhanth Kapoor, who plays Gyancho (!), doesn’t leave too much of an impression either.

What to do?
Even with a booty-licious performance by Sunny Leone, ‘Shootout At Wadala’ disappoints more than it entertains. We recommend that you wait for the TV premiere.
