If you’re craving romance, you will definitely savour Satish Rajwade’s ‘Premachi Goshta’. The film is a love story within a love story starring ‘Natarang’ actor Atul Kulkarni and ‘Chak De! India’ girl Sagarika Ghatge, who make for an odd, but cute pair.
What’s it about?
Scriptwriter Ram Subramaniam (Atul Kulkarni) and Sonal (Sagarika Ghatge) are divorced individuals who meet at a family court. Sonal then starts helping Ram with his script and it finally gets a nod from the producers Ram has been hounding. During the process of scriptwriting, Sonal falls in love with Ram. However, Ram is still hoping that his wife Ragini (Sulekha Talwalkar) will have a change of heart and come back. After many misunderstandings and tears, the complicated relationships are sorted and true love triumphs in the end.
Love stories always have mass appeal, and this one’s no different. ‘Premachi Goshta’ explores the genre of romance, inspired loosely by Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Kulkarni as the romantic hero does justice to his role, and though we still prefer him as the rustic Guna Kagalkar from ‘Natarang’, his attempt to break away from his image as a serious actor has not failed. It’s truly refreshing to see Kulkarni go the lovey-dovey route instead of playing yet another intense, complex character. The Marathi industry has a dearth of pretty faces, and therefore Sagarika Ghatge’s debut is a pleasant welcome. She struggles with dialogue delivery and her accent is affected. That said, we’re sure Marathi producers will now queue outside Ghatge’s door for new projects. Veteran actor Rohini Hattangadi’s comeback as a doting mother is also a delight.
Director Satish Rajwade also plays the role of Atul Kulkarni’s friend in the movie. He has given the industry remarkable films like ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai’ and ‘Gair’, and this time too, delivers a memorable film. Rajwade directs well, but same cannot be said about his acting. Many Marathi serial enthusiasts still remember his police act in a serial called ‘Asambhav’. He must stick to playing tough roles as smirking does not suit him. Also, why were we subjected to large pop outs announcing who was calling every time a phone rang? Give the audience some credit, for crying out loud!
The music of the film is notable. Listening to Kailash Kher singing in Marathi came as a pleasant surprise.
What to do?
Watch it with your better half for a romantic evening.

If Spike Jonze's 'Her' imagined a delicate, heartfelt romance between man and his artificially intelligent operating system, then 'Transcendence', directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, takes a less optimistic view of the future, cautioning us about the dangers of relying too heavily on technology. They're two sides of the same coin, but where 'Her' felt fresh, original, and forward-looking, Pfister's film trades in familiar clichés.
