'Premium Rush' doesn't offer quite the kind of adrenaline shot the trailers and title promised, but it is, for the most, a freewheeling and exhilarating trip, thanks to its currently can-do-no-wrong lead actor.
What's it about?
Wiley (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a New York bike messenger, who delivers letters and parcels across the city. He likes to literally live in the fast lane, with no brakes and gears on his wheels, and is the one to beat at his workplace, until a delivery throws him off course. The package, handed to him by love interest Vanessa's (Dania Ramirez) roommate, contains something that NYPD cop Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon) is desperate to get his hands on and thus begins the officer's ruthless pursuit of Wiley.
Watching Gordon-Levitt zip across busy streets is as delightful as sticking your face in front of a table fan running at max speed on a really hot day. On the other hand, while Shannon might prove stiff competition to Jim Carrey if they ever came head-to-head in a face contorting competition, he's not believable as a corrupt cop. The climax of 'Premium Rush' is also a disappointment, but the ride to there, with more than one exciting bike chase, sure is fun.
What to do?
You won't be poorer for having missed 'Premium Rush', but it does offer a fun, heady experience to keep the week's blues at bay for a while.
