Vendhar Movies’ Thillu Mullu is a remake of 1981 classic comedy by K.Balachandar with the same name, which in turn is based on Bollywood hit ‘Gol Maal’. Remaking a classic comedy is always difficult thing to do. Director Badri has taken this challenging task relying solely on Shiva and he doesn’t disappoint.
What’s it about?
Pasupathy (Shiva) loses his home as surety and completely in shatters as he has as unmarried sister (Monisha). His lawyer, (Ilavarasu) who’s also his uncle suggests joining his friend Sivagurunathan’s (Prakash Raj) company by impressing him with spiritual values. So, Pasupathy disguises himself as a god fearing man to land a job of a Marketing manager in the company. When Sivaguru sees Pasupathy in a 20-20 cricket match and in the verge of firing him, he saves himself by lying that he has a look-alike twin brother named ‘Ganguly’ Kandan with eye colour being only difference. But things turn topsy turvy when Pasupathy keeps on lying to hide his first lie and it gets worse when Sivaguru’s daughter, Janani falls for Kandan. Whether Pasupathy gets his lady love and how he gets his sister married forms the hilarious climax.
Director Badri has just taken the story of the old ‘Thillu Mullu’ and has re-worked the screenplay to suit the contemporary times. There are scenes where you will feel bored as it fails to evoke laughter like the one after interval where Manobala misunderstands ‘Kovai’ Sarala’s job and mouths mostly double meaning dialogues, but these are very few and far between the funny moments. Badri’s last few films didn’t do well but finally he has cracked the success formula with a safe remake infused with right commercial elements. He has succeeded mostly in delivering a full on laugh riot with two superstars Shiva & Santhanam.
Shiva has taken the entire film in his shoulders and has given his best. His comic timing is perfect and the one-liners are hilarious. The way he delivers it with a flat face is enjoyable. Whenever the film goes off track, Shiva saves it by coming up with most whacky dialogues. Veteran Prakash Raj performs what is expected out of him. New face Isha Talwar looks beautiful and takes care of the romance part well with few duets. Kovai Sarala is at times loud and irritating. Other supporting actors like Soori, Sathyan, etc have played their part well.
Music by M.S.Viswanathan and Yuvan Shankar Raja are good. The lively opening ‘Thillu Mullu’ remix track peps up the proceedings but the same cannot be said for other songs. Although the songs are not bad, the situation in which they are inserted into the script is amateurish and it definitely hampers the pace of the movie. Cinematography by J.Lakshmanan is okay and the duo Praveen-Srikanth has done a good job in editing.
Overall, Thillu Mullu is good fun while it lasts and enjoyable for Shiva’s antics. Any remake’s success is when it makes us forget the original and this new Thillu Mull does that well with different situations and a decent cast.
What to do?
Go with low expectations and enjoy this laughter ride. You will love it more, if you like Shiva’s style of fun.
