Nolan rants about Netflix during an interview.

Christopher Nolan is ready with his latest offering. His war film Dunkirk has opened to glorious reviews and has prompted halls in India to showcase the film a day earlier.

But the man who is being compared to the K word, Stanley Kuberick in this case, has a grouse with OTT giants NETFLIX. In an interview with indiewire, Nolan has dissed the Netflix Originals, calling it “pointless”.

“They have this mindless policy of everything having to be simultaneously streamed and released, which is obviously an untenable model for theatrical presentation. So they’re not even getting in the game, and I think they’re missing a huge opportunity.”
He went on to support Amazon in this aspect which has a theatrical release before being available on its platform.
“The theaters have a 90-day window. It’s a perfectly usable model. It’s terrific.”

Bong Joon-ho, the South Korean director for Netflix Original Okja, in an interview earlier had countered that argument.
He said, “The best way to watch a film is in the theater. But for directors who make weird films like mine, the digital studio platforms are a great creative opportunity. I do believe that the two [modes] can coexist.”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has also repeatedly emphasized that Netflix doesn’t envision a world where movie theaters don’t exist.
But Nolan clearly doesn't share that opinion. “I think the investment that Netflix is putting into interesting filmmakers and interesting projects would be more admirable if it weren’t being used as some kind of bizarre leverage against shutting down theaters. It’s so pointless. I don’t really get it,” he said.

Nolan comes from the age of home videos. “Your worst nightmare in the ‘90s as a filmmaker was that the studio would turn around and go, ‘You know what? We’re going to put it on video instead of theaters.’ They did that all the time. There’s nothing new in that.”
Hence, a collaboration with Netflix Original is a complete no no for Christopher Nolan, unless, they put in theatres and stream it 90 days later.

Meanwhile, you can happily stream Inception, Batman Begins and Interstellar on Netflix. Nolan's creations that have had their run on the silver screen way back when.
