A Shiba dog carrying a flag in his mouth has been leading groups of pupils on their way to school at a street crossing in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, gaining the local community's attention.
The 10-year-old dog, Sunny, stands at the crosswalk outside a nearby elementary school on the first and 15th day of each month in the morning with his owner, Koji Nomura(68).
The dog leads the students while carrying the flag instructing drivers to stop. During red lights, the pupils typically speak to the dog while waiting for the signal to change. Nomura, who has been involved in neighborhood watch activities for many years, said the idea was born when he thought about whether Sunny could lead pupils crossing the street and consulted with a dog trainer.
The dog and his owner started training together in April before launching the activity earlier this month.
"Sunny is cute," said 10-year-old Shiori Aikawa, a fifth grader. "I think I am going to cross the street safely because he walks over the street with us," she said.
