Peter Joseph Noozhumurry Varghes is an Australian diplomat and public servant. An ethnic Malayalee, Varghese was born in Kenya to Indian parents, and emigrated to Australia as a child. He is currently Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (ONA), an Australian government intelligence agency which reports directly to the Prime Minister of Australia.Prior to this he was Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, then Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).In June 2009, Varghese was appointed as Australias High Commissioner to India, and is due to take up the appointment in August 2009.
