The curtains came down on one of tennis' most prestigious events on Sunday, and so we look back at the moments that made this year's tourney special. For starters, it marked the miraculous comeback of Fedex. Roger Federer claimed his seventh Wimbledon title, equalling the record set by previous champions, Pete Sampras and William Renshaw. He defeated Britain's number one, Andy Murray in the final (4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4).
French champions knocked out early: French Open champion Rafael Nadal must have thought Wimbledon would be a cakewalk, after he held court on clay. However the Spaniard lost to the unseeded Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic in the second round, causing a major upset. The same too went for the women's French Open champ Maria Sharapova, who was touted as a 'favourite' but lost to 15th seed Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round. Gilles Simon's chauvinistic comments: He may not have been the court superstar but Frenchman Gilles Simon grabbed headlines when he took a swipe at women tennis players. He said, "Men's tennis remains more attractive than women's tennis and so women tennis players should be paid on that basis." Predictably this didn't go down well with many women players, including Maria Sharapova and we wonder if Sania Mirza (who accused the AITA of chauvinism) is penning her next letter to Simon now.
Ivo Karlovic plays sore loser: Ivo Karlovic lost favour with Wimbledon organisers when he claimed that tournament officials deliberately favoured Britain number one Andy Murray. Karlovic's comments came when the former was called up by the officials for foot-faults in match against Murray in the second round.
Leander Paes enters final: Despite the many controversies surrounding Indian tennis players, Leander Paes made it to the finals of the mixed doubles with partner Elena Vesnina. Though the pair lost to Mike Bryan and Lisa Raymond in the finals, Paes certainly proved that despite being in the eye of a storm, he could leave his troubles behind when he walk out onto the court. Let’s hope we can see similar gameplay at the Olympics!
SW19 roof creates a stir: It wasn't only the players who hogged the limelight at Wimbledon. The Centre Court roof left many players confused, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic who questioned the usage of the same during their games.
Sun sets on Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters: The sun seemed to have set on many greats during the tournament. Fans of American tennis star Andy Roddick were left wondering if he will make it to Wimbledon next year, after losing to Spaniard David Ferrer. Former four-time Grand Slam title winner Kim Clijsters also bid farewell to the English tourney, bowing out in the fourth round. (in pic: Andy Roddick waves to the crowd)
Serena makes a comeback: She may have been out of the game for quite a while but former number one Serena Williams got back her groove as she thrashed Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in the finals of women's Wimbledon game 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. This victory might serve a sharp retort to many who thought it was time for Serena to give up her racket. She also won the women's doubles title with sister, Venus. Murray cries, Marray wins: There was no stopping the waterworks for Britain's shining star Andy Murray who let the tears loose on losing to Roger Federer in the men's finals. However, the nation had something to cheer about when Jonathan Marray won the men's doubles finals (with Frederik Nielsen) and became the first Brit to win the title since 1936. Radawanska's respiratory problems: Before the big game against Serena Williams, Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska was suffering from a respiratory infection. There were doubts over her appearance in the finals, but Radwanska put all uncertainties to bed as she walked out to the Centre court. And even though she lost, she gave Serena a tough fight in the second set of the finals.
