From love-stuck teenager to revolutionary, Aamir Khan has done it all. As he turns 48 on March 14, we run through some of the varied roles that this perfectionist played flawlessly.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak- Aamir played Raj, a boy madly in love with Rashmi (Juhi Chawla). Aamir left a good impression on the audiences with his chocolate boy looks and good acting skills way back in 1988, so much so that his moves in the song ‘Papa Kehte Hain' style are copied even today.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander- As the naughty Sanjay Lal Sharma, Aamir Khan gave us a taste of high school rivalry, first love and heartbreak. Also the picture of Aamir swinging his seater in the air in slow-motion has been etched in our memories forever.
Rangeela- Aamir's rugged, ragamuffin act in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Rangeela' is hard to forget. Selling movie tickets in black outside Mumbai theatres in his multi-coloured shirts and black cap, Munna was quite the lovable tapori.
Andaaz Apna Apna- We all knew about Aamir's comic timing from his past films, but he tickled the audience's funny bone like none other could in the 1994 film, 'Andaaz Apna Apna'. He plays a conman, Amar, who wants to marry a rich heiress and inherit her fortune. His funny one-liners, priceless expressions and outstanding pairing with Salman Khan made this a cult classic.
Sarfarosh- ACP Ajay Singh Rathod in the 1999 release 'Sarfarosh' was a no-nonsence and honest cop. Aamir played the sombre cop, who enjoys the company of a ghazal singer and the shy lover, well.
1947: Earth- As Dil Navaz, an ice candy man in Deepa Mehta's '1947: Earth', Aamir wowed us in a negative role. The film had other good performances in Nandita Das and Rahul Khanna.
Lagaan- As Bhuvan, a villager who learns the English game of cricket and defeats them, Aamir Khan gave us one of his career's best performances. Perfecting the Avadhi-Bhojpuri dialect, Aamir's cricket team won many hearts abroad too and the movie was even nominated at the Oscars that year.
Dil Chahta Hai- The extremely stylish directorial debut of Farhan Akhtar presented Aamir Khan to us in a fresh new look. Apart from his cool performance, his casual goatee was an instant hit with college crowd.
Mangal Pandey - The Rising - Aamir played the role of a sepoy in the Indian Mutiny Struggle of 1857 in this Ketan Mehta-directed film. Although the film was a dud at the box office, Aamir's long hair and handle-bar moustache made news nevertheless.
Rang De Basanti- In 2006, Aamir played a college boy again in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Rang De Basanti' and struck a cord with the audiences this time as well. With an ensemble cast, Aamir as 'DJ' entertained us with more than just the booty-slapping dance in this blockbuster.
Taare Zameen Par- We saw a very different Aamir in his directorial debut as an art teacher in 'Taare Zameen Par'. His sensitive handling of the subject of dyslexia was worth mention. The film gave us another star, Darsheel Safary, and was India's official entry to the Oscars that year.
Ghajini- Aamir wowed us again in the pyshcological thriller, 'Ghajini'. Inspired by Christopher Nolan's 'Memento', Aamir plays the role of Sanjay Singhania, a businessman who after his lover's death suffers from anterograde amnesia. Aamir was in the news mostly for his six-pack abs and beefed up body.
3 Idiots- Aamir, it seems could not let go off the college boy act, and he reprised it again in Raj Kumar Hirani's '3 idiots'. An engineering student, and later a renowned scientist, Aamir entertained the masses this time around as well.
Dhobi Ghat- Aamir plays a recluse painter in wife, Kiran Rao's directorial debut, ‘Dhobi Ghat’. His intense, brooding performance perfectly suited the character of Arun.
