The unprecedented Presidential race drama has left our head haarting. Een phact, as the drama plays out on TV, we have heard everyone from Mamata Banerjee to Gurudas Dasgupta wax eloquent in Benglish. But let us warn you, this is just the beginning. After all those Budget speeches in Parliament, brace up for an overdose of Bangla Ingreji in Rashtrapati Bhawan too. From the look of things, it seems Pranab Mukherjee will be shifting base to Raisina Hills sooner than later! Photo: PTI
And it's a fair bet that when Pranab Mukherjee resigns as Finance Minister and makes the announcement he is bhery happy to inphorm the House about the decision, we will again be left wondering whether his speech was indeed in English or Benglish. Photo: PTI

And it's not just us saying it. The Wikileaks cables described Pranab Mukherjee as "soft-spoken and articulate, but speaks English with a heavy Bengali accent that can be difficult for Americans to understand." Well, Pranab-da's Bengali accent is still firmly in place and doesn't look like its going anywhere in a hurry. Photo: PTI

And it's not just Pranab da whose Benglish amuses us. Bhest BengalCheap Ministaar in Writaars Buiding, Mamata Banerjee (Pranab da's bete noir at the moment) is not far behind. If you heard Mamata Banerjee's statements on TV, you would know that listening to her talk can trigger off a laugh riot, like what happened in Parliament last year. Photo: PTI

Last year, during the course of her speech, Mamata goofed up, incorrectly pronouncing words at many places. "Stop shouting or it bhill affect my pronounciation," she said in her defence, inviting more laughs from the House. For the moment, it is Pranab's Benglish versus Mamata's Benglish. It remains to be seen who will have the last word, especially now since the TMC has opposed Pranab's nomination. Photo: PTI
