As Starbucks gets ready to open its first cafe in Mumbai on Friday, we give you a complete lowdown on the American global coffee chain that has been brewing amazing coffee for the past three decades. Starbucks India is a joint venture between Starbucks and Tata Global Beverages Limited and is opening at Elphinstone Building in Horniman Circle. This flagship outlet can comfortably hold 100 people.
The name: The name ‘Starbucks’ is taken from ‘Starbuck’, Captain Ahab's first mate in the American adventure novel MobyDick. Originally, the three founders- Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegl- wanted to call the cafe Pequod, which was vetoed by some of the co-founders. And the company was instead named after the chief mate on the Pequod.
The logo: Starbucks’ twin-tailed mermaid logo has evolved over the years to adapt to the changing times. From coffee brown to green and white, the logo has had its share of makeovers. The original logo (from 1971-1987) was based on a ‘Norse’ woodcut and the mermaid was topless with a fully visible double fish tail and bust. The second variant (that ran from 1987–92) had her breasts covered by her flowing hair. While in the third version (1992 – 2011), her navel and breasts are not visible at all.
Fun facts about Starbucks: The pastry at Starbucks with the lowest amount of calories is the low-fat blueberry muffin (290 calories), while the pastry with the highest calorie content is the cinnamon roll (640 calories).
The most expensive coffee at Starbucks is the Kona Coffee.
Caff Medici (that is a combination of a doppio poured over chocolate syrup and orange peel, along with whipped cream on top) is a rare drink that is not served at every Starbucks cafe but is supposed to be worth every penny spent on it!
