Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' will see Batman's adversaries, Catwoman and Bane, take on Gotham's caped crusader. We look at Batman's archenemies from the movies gone by:
Joker: Touted as his arch nemesis, it was the Joker who murdered Bruce Wayne’s parents and therefore led to his eventual transformation into the caped crusader. The Joker is a psychopath, who engages into criminal activities and has a dark and sadistic sense of humor. The Joker and Batman stand-off has been one of the fiercest rivalries in comic book history. Jack Nicholson and the Late Heath Ledger have portrayed Joker on the big screen.
Bane: Another close adversary of Batman, Bane is a physically and intellectually powerful foe. He injects himself with a drug that grants him superior body strength. Bane is the only supervillain who manages to break Batman’s back. The character of Bane was seen in the movie 'Batman and Robin' and will be portrayed by Tom Hardy in 'The Dark Knight Rises'.
Two-Face: Harvey Dent was at one time, the district attorney of Gotham City and a close friend of Bruce Wayne. But a tragic accident gruesomely left half of his face scarred and turned him into a supervillain. Harvey Dent as Two-Face makes his every decision with the flip of a coin. Tommy Lee Jones and Aaron Eckhart have earlier played this bad guy in the movies.
Riddler: Another of Batman's supervillains, The Riddler often plants puzzles and riddles to fox Batman and Robin. He wears a trademark green suit, that's has question marks printed on it. Actor Jim Carrey played the role of Riddler in 'Batman Forever'.
Penguin: One of Batman's oldest rivals – the Penguin is a stocky character who is often armed with high-tech umbrella and has a soft spot for birds. Danny De Vito famously portrayed the role of Penguin in the movie 'Batman Returns'
Scarecrow: The menacing Scarecrow uses hallucinogenic drugs to take advantage of his adversaries. Batman and his sidekick Robin have often been Scarecrow’s victims, but the Dark Knight often finds ways to think clearly even in an attack. Scarecrow was played by Cillian Murphy in 'Batman Begins'
Poison Ivy: Dr. Pamela Isley turns into Poison Ivy after she falls into a vat of toxins. She's been often called an 'eco-terrorist' and also doubles up as one of the caped crusader's romantic interests. Uma Thurman played the role of Poison Ivy in 'Batman & Robin'.
Catwoman: Selina Kyle as Catwoman, shares a love-hate relationship with Batman. This femme fatale uses her sex appeal to bamboozle folks and is a highly accomplished thief. Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway have played the role.
Mr. Freeze: Dr, Victor Fries, also known as Mr. Freeze, is forced to wear a suit in order to survive after he is a victim of a failed experiment in which Dr. Fries tries to find a cure for his wife Nora. Mr. Freeze uses his cold gun to freeze his enemies. Arnold Schwarzenegger played him in the movie 'Batman & Robin'.
Ra's Al Ghul: Another one of Batman's antagonists, Ra's Al Ghul is out to decimate humanity so to attain a perfect environmental balance. He is aided by the Lazarus Pits, who devises a way to keep him alive for generations. Liam Neeson played the role of this baddie in the movie 'Batman Begins'
