From the much-awaited reboot of the movie franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man) to now celebrations to mark the superhero’s 50th birth anniversary on August 1, this year has certainly been the best for Spider-Man fans! We wish the superhero a very happy birthday and tell all the things that you need to know about Spidey!
Spider-Man, the alter ego of high-school student Peter Parker, was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko, who had conceived the idea as teenagers!
Peter Parker is a science whiz, who was orphaned at a young age and lives with his uncle Ben and aunt Mary.
Spidey first appeared in ‘Amazing Fantasy #15’ in August, 1962. Lee and Ditko had no idea that their creation was going to be so successful and the comics led to spin-offs on TV as well as on the big screen!
Peter Parker has developed from a shy, nerdy high-school student, to troubled college student, to married high-school teacher to a single, freelance photographer.
Spidey has super strength and the ability to cling on to most surfaces (as a result of a radioactive spider bite). He can shoot spider-webs using devices of his own invention (web-shooters), and uses his ‘spider-sense’ to detect when danger is around the corner.
On TV, the superhero first appeared in the ABC animated series ‘Spider-Man’ (1967-1970) and the CBS live-action series ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (1978–1979).
The wall-crawler first appeared on the big screen in the 2002 trilogy ‘Spider-Man’, where Tobey Maguire played the titular role. The other movies in the series include ‘Spider-Man 2’, and, ‘Spider-Man 3’. The franchise was in for an overhaul in 2012 with Andrew Garfield taking over from Maguire to play the superhero.
Spidey also had his Broadway debut with the musical, ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’, which began on November 14, 2010 at the Foxwoods Theatre on Broadway.
Parkers’ two most important love interests have been Gwendolen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson. The other prominent ones were Debra Whitman and Black Cat aka Felicia Hardy.
His most vicious enemies have been Chameleon, Kaine, Doctor Octopus, and the dreaded Green Goblin, among many others.
The Spidey has appeared in more than 1,000 comic books, with the title ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ being the most popular of the series!
Peter’s middle name ‘Benjamin’ has been used only once, in the issue ‘Web of Spider-Man’ in 1985.
The web-slinger will get the ultimate birthday present in the form of a sidekick ‘Alpha’ in the new series ‘The Amazing Spider-Man #692’.
