At the 2012 London Games, the Indian contingent made the country proud by winning medals and hearts too. Here is a look at the performance of the Indian athletes at the games – their best ever so far.
MC Mary Kom:
The five-time world champion, MC Mary Kom came into the games as a favourite to win a gold medal, but several challenges came up, including the need to put on weight since the world body decided to allow women's boxing in only three weight categories - 75, 60 and 51. Kom however, made her nation proud by winning the first ever bronze medal in the women's boxing category.
Yogeshwar Dutt:
On 12 Aug 2012, Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt provided his country a late boost by claiming a memorable bronze in the men's freestyle 60 kg category and thus became the second wrestler to bag a medal in the country’s history at the Games.
Sushil Kumar:
Sushil Kumar was in as good form as he was at the Beijing Olympics, and won India a silver medal. Though he lost in the finals to Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu of Japan, Sushil put on a brave fight. Sushil had also led the Indian contingent at the 2012 London Olympic Games and was India's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. With the medal, he also becomes India's most accomplished Olympian – with two individual medals to his credit.
Saina Nehwal:
Shuttle star Saina Nehwal brought home India's first medal in badminton. Nehwal defeated Xin Wang of China to clinch a bronze.
Gagan Narang:
All eyes were on Abhinav Bindra to win gold again, like in Beijing 2008, but it was Gagan Narang who stole the show. He went on to win India its first medal (bronze) in the 10m air rifle event.
Vijay Kumar:
An army man by profession, Vijay Kumar won India a silver medal with an impressive display in the 25m rapid fire pistol event. Kumar was also a bronze medallist at the last Asian Games and also won three gold medals in the Commonwealth Games at New Delhi.
Parupalli Kashyap:
India's only representative in the men's singles badminton - Parupalli Kashyap surpassed everybody’s expectations by becoming the first Indian man to reach the quarter finals of the badminton event at the Olympics. Though he lost to world number 2, Lee Chong Wei in the quarters, Kashyap enthralled everyone with his display.
Deepika Kumari:
Going into the Olympics as the number one archer in the world, Deepika Kumari was a favourite to land a medal but her display was disappointing. She failed to progress in the individual and women’s events and let many Indian fans down.
Abhinav Bindra:
The Beijing gold medallist was a favourite to win but Bindra failed to qualify in the final stage. Abhinav Bindra's no show was a let down for many Indians.
Vijender Singh:
Indian boxing star Vijender Singh crashed out of London Olympics in the quarterfinals round. Vijender, who had won a bronze at the Beijing Olympics, failed to recreate magic in the ring and went down 13-17 to his Uzbek opponent.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa:
The women's badminton duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa fought valiantly, but were ousted from the medal contention. Controversy marred their result but the Badminton World Federation played down the claims.
Indian tennis:
The Indian tennis contingent boasted of a strong line-up, that included the likes of Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna, amongst the ranks. Controversy dogged the players even before they walked out on court and they eventually returned empty handed from the London Olympics.
Indian hockey team:
Under the guidance of coach Michael Nobbs, the Indian hockey team qualified for the London Olympics and raised the hopes of the nation. But the team slipped to an all-time low when they failed to record a single win and finished at bottom of their group. It was by far, the worst performance ever for the Indian hockey team at the Games.
