When it comes to rape, sexual assault and women's rights, there is no doubt that our politicians can come up with some really bizarre stuff to claim the limelight. From suggesting that eating chowmein leads to rape to blaming the retreating line of skirt hems behind the growing number of cases of eve-teasing, our wise netas never fail to amaze us with their reasoning on what causes rapes and violent crimes. Here's the hall of shame.
A Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh is facing severe criticism for making sexist remarks that women invite trouble by looking at men in a suggestive manner, drawing flak from BJP.At a Congress rally in Bhind district, he made the following speech, ‘"Jab tak mahila tirchi najar se nahi dekhegi, tab tak purush use nahi chedega".
Union Minister Vayalar Ravi was caught on video making a personal swipe at a female reporter who wanted his reaction on PJ Kurien's alleged involvement in the 1996 Suryanelli gangrape case.
When the reporter asked Ravi for his comments, this was Ravi's reply, "Do you have anything personal against Kurien? I am sure you do. Has something happened between you and him in the past?"
Should we let our elected lot get away with sleazy behaviour with women journalists?
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday kicked up a controversy with his remark that rapes happened in cities and not in the rural areas. "Such crimes hardly take place in Bharat, but they frequently occur in India," Bhagwat said seeming to indicate that "westernization" in Indian cities was the reason behind increasing cases of rapes.
MP BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya stated that women who did not stay within their limits, paid the price for it just like Sita was abducted by Ravana after she crossed the 'Lakshman rekha'.
"Ek hi shabd hai - Maryada. Maryada ka ulanghan hota hai, toh Sita-haran ho jata hai. Laxman-rekha har vyakti ki khichi gayi hai. Us Laxman-rekha ko koi bhi par karega, toh Rawan samne baitha hai, woh Sita-haran karke le jayega. (One has to abide by certain moral limits. If you cross this limit you will be punished, just like Sita was abducted by Ravana)," Vijayvargiya had said.
In a shocking remark, Asaram Bapu held the Delhi gangrape victim responsible for the barbaric sexual assault on her.
"Only 5-6 people are not the culprits. The victim daughter is as guilty as her rapists... She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop... This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don't think so," Media reports quoted Asaram Bapu, as saying.
The remark comes at a time when the entire nation is mourning the death of the 23-year-old brave heart who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later after the heinous crime.
Just days after his shocking statement on rape, RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat raised questions on the sanctity of the institution of marriage by saying that married women should limit themselves to household chores.
"Marriage is nothing more than a social contract where the husband promises the wife food and security while the wife will take care of the household duties. If the wife fails to deliver, the husband should leave the wife," said Bhagawat as per a Times Now report.
