How many times have you heard the phrase ‘It Happens Only In India’ barring the Govinda song? From stripping in Parliament to weird monsoon rituals to brides leaving home because there was no toilet, we bring you some wacky incidents that reek of ‘Indian-ess’!
This government goof-up is bound to take the year's share of cake! According to the UIDAI, the agency that is handling the processing of the same, an incorrect algorithm was the reason for the error!
Just like the witch from the popular fairytale 'Rapunzel', who cuts off the princess' hair in anger, a man in Ghaziabad cut off his wife's braid because she had forgotten to cover her head with a dupatta. Rukshana, a resident of Prem Nagar in Ghaziabad, had gone to the roof of her home for some work without covering her head. Enraged by this, her husband cut off her plait.
Runaway bride returns home to new toilet- A new bride at a remote village near Lucknow ran away from her in-law’s home because she was asked to defecate in the open. In a country where pooping publically is quite the norm, this feisty lady fled to her parents when she was asked to use the ‘open’ toilet. Her in-laws, who were embarrassed by the turn of events, had to build a brand new toilet for her so that she could return to her husband’s home. Priyanka Bharati, the bride, was also awarded Rs 2 lakhs by Sulabh International for her efforts! Look what proper toilet training fetched her!
Mizo man has 39 wives, 94 children! Zionnghaka Chana (67) from Mizoram has perhaps, the world’s largest family, what with his 39 wives and more than 120 children and grandchildren! The Mizo man, who heads a Christian cult called ‘Channa’, is still keen to expand his family by marrying a few more women. He has expressed his desire to even travel beyond the borders of Mizoram to find his wife number 40! This man has clearly never heard of ‘Hum Do, Humare Do!’ and instead probably spent all his years growing up watching Sooraj Barjatya movies on big, fat, Indian families.
Acid attack, if you wear jeans! Jharkhand Mukti Sangh, a group from Ranchi, threatened to throw acid at women wearing jeans or forgetting to cover their modesty with their duppattas. This group’s actions were eventually dismissed as the act of mischief mongers by the police, but not before panic had spread around Albert Ekka roundabout, the institutional hub of Ranchi. We’re inclined to think that jeans and a t-shirt cover up far more than a sari and blouse, but hey, that’s just us!
Sweeper becomes a surgeon! Stitching wounds and administering injections could very well be a child’s play as seen in a Lucknow hospital where sweepers have replaced dcotors to perform surgeries! These sweepers have been pitching in due to the non-availability of qualified staff. The state health minister Ahmed Hasan ordered a probe into this case after a news channel broke this shocking news. Moral of the story: if in Lucknow, stay away from government hospitals!
Drink your own urine! A Viswa Bharti university warden asked one of her pupils to drink her own urine as a punishment for bed-wetting. This inane punishment, which was never fully carried out, became the topic of numerous debates across the nation where the warden was slammed for her semi barbaric brand of punishment. But then, what more can you expect, when a former Prime Minister (Moraji Desai) and social activists (Swami Agnivesh) advocate the health benefits of downing a glass of your pee.
Woman offers Rahul Gandhi dowry-Om Shanti Sharma has big dreams for her daughter, which involves getting her child married off to Rahul Gandhi. The simpleton from New Delhi is also ready to shell out Rs 15 crore as dowry to the Congress general secretary if he refuses the marriage proposal! Judging by Rahul’s worth, that’s quite a deal!
Got a zero? Be an engineer! Even though 22 out of 78 SC/ST candidates scored a zero on their engineering test, they were admitted into an Andhra Engineering institute thanks to the reservation policy, that is a hotly debated and yet deeply rooted part of our education system. Failure may be the stepping stone to success, but this is just taking it too far, don’t you think?
Case against Jism 2 for misleading the public Porn star Sunny Leone’s Bollywood debut ‘Jism 2’ failed to set the cash registers ringing, even though it was involved in many controversies! One of the wackiest has to be where a case against the movie was registered in Kanpur for misleading the public. Petitioners claimed that the movie did not have a topless scene, as advertised in the posters!
Billionaire dies penniless- Chembur resident Ghanshyam Rangnekar, a billionaire with flats worth over a couple of crores, died penniless and without any relatives. The 75-year-old man slipped into coma after he suffered a cerebral stroke. Since no relative had come forward to claim the body or his wealth, he was cremated by his society members!
Frogs get married to bring rain! At a remote village in Assam, two frogs got hitched, not to see if a kiss would turn them into a prince and princess but to appease the rain gods. With Assam going through a dry spell, the villagers decided to get the amphibians married. The frogs, cheekily named Barun (wind) and Bijli (lightening), were fed sumptuous Assamese fare and were also given wedding presents! Some frogs, like dogs, do have their days.
