West Indies were crowned the World T20 Champions after they defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the finals. Since the T20 World Cup is over, we have drummed up our very own T20 playing eleven – a combination that will be just unplayable!
Shane Watson:
The 31-year-old all-rounder amassed a total of 249 runs at an average of 49.80 and also starred with the ball for Australia. His 11-wicket haul in the tournament at an average of 16 and an economy rate of 7.33 proved to be quite useful for Aussies. Though the team from Down Under failed in the semis, Shane Watson was the star of the tourney, claiming the 'Man of the Tournament' award.
Chris Gayle:
Leave aside his 'gangnam style' dance moves, Chris Gayle took the T20 World Cup by storm. Leaving his past troubles behind, Gayle stormed his side into the finals with a breathtaking display of strokes. Having amassed 222 runs with a strike rate of 150, the 'Gayle show' ruled the roost throughout the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
Mahela Jayawardene (C):
The second highest scorer in the tournament, Mahela Jayawardene led his side with vigour and fortitude. Even though he failed to win the T20 title for his country, Mahela won praises from many seniors cricketers for his captaincy. Sadly, he has step down but Mahela still wins our vote to lead the side.
Virat Kohli:
Though the Indian team failed to progress to the semis, one bright spot that emerged for Dhoni and co was the dominating form of star batsman Virat Kohli. The Delhi batsman was the highest run getter for the Indian side and without a doubt, he makes the cut into our squad!
Brendon McCullum (wk):
He scored the only century of the T20 World Cup showcasing his devastating form as he scored a blistering 123 against Bangladesh in the group game. Though the Kiwis failed to progress further, Brendon McCullum is one of the deadliest batsman in T20 cricket.
Marlon Samuels:
West Indies were down and out in the final but in walked Marlon Samuels and blasted Lasith Malinga to all corners of the park. His blistering 78 in the finals proved a nail in the coffin for Mahela and his side as the Carribeans cruised to their first ever T20 title.
Irfan Pathan:
Yes, we have selected Irfan Pathan on the grounds of his performance in the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka. The Baroda lad might have been facing a lot of flak, but Irfan was perfect with his line and length and gave India major breakthroughs. Surprisingly, Irfan also outshone strike bowler Zaheer Khan in the bowling department.
Ajantha Mendis: The man with the golden arm, Ajantha Mendis's spell of 4-12 in the final will go down as one of the finest ever. Though he ended up on the losing side, Mendis still showed his class claiming 15 wickets at an economy of 6.12. (in pic: Ajantha Mendis)
Mitchell Starc: The fiery left-arm pacer bamboozled many top batsman with his pace and swing. Mitchell Starc claimed 10 wickets in the tournament and led his side into the semi-finals. Though the Aussies lost out to the West Indies, Starc has announced himself on to the world stage! (In pic: Mitchell Starc)
Sunil Narine:
West Indies key 'weapon' Sunil Narine showed his class as he contributed with the ball and lead his side to their first ever World T2O title. His figures of 3-9 in the final were one of the many factors that resulted in the Sri Lankan collapse. Narine took 9 wickets with an economy 5.63 in the tournament.
Dale Steyn:
The selection of Dale Steyn over Lasith Malinga was a very tough one for us but the South African gets our vote due to his work rate. Even though the South Africans failed to win a single game in the Super Eights, Steyn was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas.
