A year after the first phone went on sale, Apple announced the iPhone 3G that featured a better operating system, push email and was, as the name suggested, 3G enabled. The phone also marked the opening of the App Store - an application that allowed users to browse, download or buy third-party applications

June 2009 saw the introduction of the iPhone 3GS, where s stood for speed. The phone had a better camera and included voice control, that allowed users to control music and phone features by voice

Announced in June 2010, the iPhone allowed video calling (marketed as FaceTime by Apple). In addition to the 5 megapixel camera on the rear, it also had a front facing VGA camera. The new phone had a stainless steel frame that doubled up as the phone's antenna and the processor was twice as fast as its predecessor

The last iPhone to hit the market was the iPhone 4S that was announced in October, 2011 - a day before the death of Apple's founder Steve Jobs. The new phone included a voice recognition system called 'Siri' and a cloud storage device called iCloud. Four million units of the phone were sold within the very first three days of its release
