Politician Vilasrao Deshmukh passed away on Tuesday, following liver failure. He last held the position of Union minister for Science and Technology and had been admitted to a super speciality hospital in Chennai more than a week ago, where he was undergoing treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma which led to organ failure

He was born on May 26, 1945 and hails from the district of Latur in Maharashtra. Vilasrao's political journey began in 1974 when he became a member of the village panchayat. He steadily rose up the ranks and was even the Chief Minister of the state of Maharashtra twice (1999-2003, 2004-2008)

He is survived by his wife Vaishali Deshmukh and three sons - Amit, Riteish and Dheeraj. Amit is an MLA from Latur and Riteish is a Bollywood actor
