Microsoft has unveiled Surface, a tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad. The 10.6in device with a keyboard that doubles as a cover, which will come in two forms: one with an ARM chip ("WinRT"), and another with an Intel chip ("x86").
The device weighs under 1.5 pounds (0.6 kilograms) and will cost about as much as other tablet computers.
The size is similar to the latest iPad, which is 9.4 millimeters thick and weighs 1.3 pounds.
Microsoft is linking the Surface's debut with the release of its much-anticipated Windows 8 operating system.
The Surface's price tag is likely to be similar to the iPad, which sells for between $499 to $829, depending on the model.
