Earlier this year, a teenage girl was molested and stripped in full public view by a group of 20 men. Most shockingly, as the ghastly crime was being committed, the onlookers watched on. On Friday, 11 were convicted under various sections of the IPC. But this is not the first such incident of crime against women in public. Here are other incidents that shamed India:

Bhubaneshwar, 2012: A woman constable was thrashed by a mob of Congress workers outside the Odisha Assembly in Bhubaneswar when several thousand Congress workers clashed with police outside the state Assembly. Alleging that Congress workers were drunk, police lathicharged them, fired water canon and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Hundreds of party workers had collected to gherao the Assembly in protest against Naveen Patnaik government's involvement in coal allocations.
Mangalore, 2012: Mangalore made headlines in July when a group of over 50 activists raided a resort and thrashed youngsters who were partying there.

Karimganj, 2012: In June this year, Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Zakir were thrashed by a mob at 'Hotel Nakshatra' in Karimganj, Assam. The mob was allegedly drunk and was believed to be angry over Rumi's second marriage without divorcing her first husband.

Mangalore, 2009: And this most recent incident hasn't been the first for Mangalore. In January 2009, about 40 Sri Ram Sene activists barged into the pub 'Amnesia - The Lounge' at the Hotel Woodside in the busy Balmatta area of Mangalore. The activists beat up a group of young women and men, claiming the women were violating traditional Indian values.

Mumbai, 2008: A year after the heinous Gateway incident, two girls were molested by a mob during New Year celebrations outside JW Mariott Hotel in Mumbai in 2008. After passing lewd commnets, the mob started fondling the women, pushing aside their male companions. The mob later ripped off the skirt worn by one of the girls. The incident left us wondering: How safe are women on Indian streets?

Mumbai, 2007: A New Year event at Mumbai's most famous landmark, the Gateway of India, went horribly sour after drunk revellers stripped and molested a woman in public view, as her friend watched helplessly. The two was surrounded by around 70 men, who tore apart the woman's clothes, while her friend tried to protect her - in vain. The horror continued for almost 10 minutes.
