Leander Paes and Sania Mirza, along with their respective partners, crashed out of the mixed doubles event of the US Open after losing in the quarterfinals. Paes who partnered Elena Vesnina was stunned by the seventh-seeded Czech duo of Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak 6-7 (2) 5-7. Unseeded Sania Mirza and Colin Fleming failed to match their more fancied opponents in the match to bow losing 3-6 5-7.

Roberta Vinci toppled second seed Agnieszka Radwanska to cap a rousing upset for at the US Open. She defeated Radwanska 6-1, 6-4 to advance further.

Fifth-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was upset by Martin Klizan of Slovakia in the second round leading to the first shock of this year's US Open.

Two-time champion Venus Williams was eliminated from the U.S. Open on Thursday, losing 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in the second round to sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna made a shocking early exit from the men's doubles event of the US Open. The eighth-seeded Indian team was defeated 3-6, 6-7 by Australians Matthew Ebden and Bernard Tomic.

Four-time Grand slam champion Kim Clijsters made an early exit from the US Open when she lost 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) to 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain in the second round on Wednesday. Clijsters' exit from the tournament has also put an end to her singles career as the mother to one has announced her retirement.

Eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki failed to make it out of the first round of her second straight Grand Slam tournament, falling 6-2, 6-2 to 96th-ranked Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania at the U.S. Open.

Four days after she quit her semifinal match in a ATP tournament, Wozniacki was ousted from the U.S. Open, finishing the match with tape that trainers applied to her hurting knee during an injury timeout in the second set.

India's Somdev Devvarman also made an early exit from the US Open. Devvarman lost 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain on the first day itself.
