Leander Paes and Sania Mirza, along with their respective partners, crashed out of the mixed doubles event of the US Open after losing in the quarterfinals. Paes who partnered Elena Vesnina was stunned by the seventh-seeded Czech duo of Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak 6-7 (2) 5-7. Unseeded Sania Mirza and Colin Fleming failed to match their more fancied opponents in the match to bow losing 3-6 5-7.

Four-time Grand slam champion Kim Clijsters made an early exit from the US Open when she lost 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) to 18-year-old Laura Robson of Britain in the second round on Wednesday. Clijsters' exit from the tournament has also put an end to her singles career as the mother to one has announced her retirement.

Eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki failed to make it out of the first round of her second straight Grand Slam tournament, falling 6-2, 6-2 to 96th-ranked Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania at the U.S. Open.
