Bandit Queen
In 1994 Shekar Kapur's 'Bandit Queen' starring Seema Biswas was also banned in India for a brief period. The film associated itself with many controversies that included a nude scene, depiction of extreme violence and rape. Based on the life of a dacoit, Phoolan Devi, the film got a lot of negative publicity when Devi herself filed a petition for using her name to sell a fabricated story. The film was banned by the Delhi High Court as it violated the personal freedom and dignity of Devi

Fire
In 1998 Deepa Mehta's 'Fire' was released post minor changes. However, Shiv Sainiks in Mumbai and Pune and Bajrang Dal activists in Delhi led violent protests against the screening of the film because of its homosexual content. The film was dropped from cinema hall listings post these incidents in Gujarat too. The film was later re-released in February 1999.

In 2007, 'Parzania', a film on the Gujarat riots that told the real life story of a Parsi boy who went missing, hit a roadblock when it got banned in Gujarat. Directed by Rahul Dhoakia and starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika, the film received a lot of critical praise and ran at cinema theatres in the rest of the country

Another film that faced a ban in Gujarat was the 2008 political-thriller, 'Firaaq'. The film starring Nandita Das, Shahana Goswami, Naseerussin Shah and Tisca Chopra was banned in the state as it was based on the violence post the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Tere Bin Laden
A satire on terrorist Osama Bin Laden directed by Abhishek Sharma, 'Tere Bin Laden' was banned in the Middle East. Not only this, the Ali Zafar film's name was changed to 'Tere Bin' in Pakistan. In the United States the film's release was delayed to gauge the response from other areas.

Black Friday
Anurag Kashyap's film, 'Black Friday' was banned in India on the eve of its release in 2004. Based on the 1993 Mumbai riots, a petition seeking a stay was filed by the people named in the film. The film hit the silver screens in 2007 only after the accused was charged under TADA.
