About Richard Nyren

Richard Nyren (born c.1734 at Eartham, Sussex; died 25 April 1797 at Bromley by Bow) was a famous English cricketer. A genuine all-rounder and the earliest known left-hander of note, Nyren was the captain of the Hambledon team during its heyday in the 1760s and 1770s. Indeed, he was known as the club\s general [1]. Richard Nyren was a nephew of the noted Slindon player Richard Newland. He moved to Hambledon from Sussex sometime before 1770 to become the landlord of the famous Bat and Ball Inn, which is still open for business immediately next to the Hambledon Club\s ground at Broadhalfpenny Down [2]. His son, John Nyren, was the author of The Cricketers of My Time [1].
