Sunday mornings will never be the same again after Aamir Khan’s talk show ‘Satyamev Jayate’. People gathered around their TV sets at 11 am sharp over the last three months to watch the superstar discuss various issues that plague the country. Now that the first season of the show ended this Sunday, here’s a quick recap:
Episode 1
Daughters are precious (Female foeticide)
The first episode was aired on May 6 marking Khan’s debut on the small screen. The issue taken up was female foeticide. The critics claimed that SMJ was the Indian version of Oprah’s talk show, but that did not stop the show from achieving a great 3.02 TRP. After the first episode, Aamir met Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to discuss the issue of female foeticide in the state. The state government suspended the licenses of 6 sonography centres and issued notices to 24 others for unauthorized sex determination tests.
Episode 2
Break the silence (Child abuse)
The second episode of the show focused on child sexual abuse. Aamir handled the sensitive issue with great sensitivity. Gay activist Harish Iyer narrated his horrific story about how he was sexually abused by his uncle for several years. Actress Sridevi was invited on the show as Harish had expressed his desire to meet her. At the end of the episode, Aamir also interacted with a group of children, and educated them about how to detect and combat abuse. Following Aamir’s plea, the Lok Sabha passed a stronger bill to protect children below 18 years from sexual abuse.
Episode 3
Marriage or market? (Dowry)
Aamir spoke about dowry in the third episode. He interviewed ladies who were cheated after marriage for dowry. He also interviewed Rani Tripathi who had conducted a sting operation on a prospective groom’s parents.
Episode 4
Every life is precious (Medical malpractice)
Due to this episode, Aamir had to face the wrath of doctors as he exposed how many cheat patients by prescribing them unnecessary medical treatments for minor ailments. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded an apology from Aamir, but the superstar stood his ground.
Episode 5
Intolerance of love (Honour killings)
The show invited real life couples to share their tragic tales. The organization ‘Love Commandos’ was brought to fore. The Delhi-based organisation helps couples by giving them basic necessities and legal help when they are turned away by family and relatives. Once again Aamir faced the ire of various khap panchayats of Haryana who demanded that the show should be taken off air.
Episode 6
Down but not out (People with disabilities)
This was a touching episode where Aamir brought to light the difficulties faced by the specially abled at public places and in society at large. The episode also threw light upon lack of equal education for the differently abled. Visually impaired Krishnakanth Mane said that every school must allow in students with disabilities and not insist upon sending them to a different institution.
Episode 7
Danger at home (Domestic violence)
Aamir ensured that the studio audience comprised of mostly men and then interviewed ladies who were victims of domestic violence. He spoke to Shanno, the Delhi woman who eloped and became a successful cab driver. Aamir had promised that he would ride in Shanno’s cab whenever he visited Delhi and fulfilled his promise soon after.
Episode 8
Poison on our plate (Pesticides)
The eighth episode focused on pesticides and its dangerous effects on the environment. The show also presented a documentary on Kasargod district in Kerala and also cast light on the adverse effects of Green revolution in Punjab. Many farmers documented, confessed that they grew organic crops for their family and a different lot of pesticide sprayed crops for the market. There was also a counterview from the managing director of a leading pesticides company who defended the usage of chemicals. The show called for the promotion of organic farming.
Episode 9
Think before you drink (Alcoholism)
Aamir had an audience who were under the age of 30 for this episode. He interviewed a reputed editor of a renowned group who told the audience how alcohol ruined his career, family and social life. Lyricist Javed Akhtar was also invited on the show, who in his earlier days was also an alcoholic.
Episode 10
Dignity for all (Casteism)
The issue of caste and untouchability was discussed in this episode. Activist Bezwada Wilson highlighted the inhuman occupation of manual scavenging. Snippets of documentary ‘India Untouched’ made by filmmaker Stalin K was also shown on the show.
Episode 11
Bachpan after Pachpan (Old Age)
The plight of the elderly in our country was the topic of the eleventh episode. Senior citizens were interviewed, disclosed some heart-wrenching stories, but there was also lots of constructive advice for senior citizens on how to be self-dependent.
Episode 12
Every drop counts (Water conservation)
In the second last episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Aamir touched upon the topic of water conservation and scarcity – a key problem given the scanty rainfall the country has received this year. The episode also educated the masses about how we get our daily water supply and from where. Aamir also explored the grim condition of major rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna and the need to adopt measures like rainwater harvesting.
Episode 13
In the last episode of the first season of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir started off by reading out a part of the Constitution and profiled some real life heroes who have taken it upon themselves to improve the lives of others.
